I've been playing games most of my life, and making them for nearly as long.
For me, games have always been about having fun with other people - both playing them and making them. Over the years I have been part of many online communities, starting in the mid 80's running a BBS. Perhaps my most memorable online experience was within EverQuest as a player, then as a guild leader, and then for four years as assistant lead programmer on the EverQuest team where many people knew me as Grumbuk. I have been part of the indie game dev community for several years and have created a number of games that appeared on XBox Live Indie Games for the XBox 360 and Windows Phone. I have always made an effort to both help out and learn from the community as we all try to figure out how to make indie development work.
With respect to my game industry experience, I am thankful to have had the pleasure of working with some great people on many types of games for several studios including Westwood Studios, Sony Online Entertainment, Rockstar San Diego and most recently KIXEYE in San Francisco. Some of my favorite work can be seen in the award winning Red Dead Redemption and EverQuest games and it is always fun for me to look back at them knowing I was able to help make these games what they are.
In October 2010 I took the plunge and founded Bounding Box Games LLC, and worked on that venture full time until April 2014 which is when I started my job as Principal Engineer at KIXEYE on War Commander: Rogue Assault. This position doesn't leave much time for the indie work but thankfully the company is a forward thinking group and they wisely understand the value of having people like me working independently to improve our skills. It's been an interesting ride and I look forward to many more years of making games.
